Valley-Floor Damp, North Slopes First
Vandalia sits on the valley floor between the Great Miami and the Stillwater. Damp air hangs. North slopes streak sooner than a ridge ten miles away. We treat the organism — we do not blast the shingles.
The Streaking Is Geography, Not Housekeeping
Low ground between two rivers holds damp air longer than the higher ground on either side. Damp air is half of what the roof algae needs. Shade is the other half. Same shingle, same age: a Vandalia north slope weathers faster than one on a ridge.
On the older ranch belt that is a long, low roof with years of it. On the newer estates off South Brown School Road and out toward the airport, the houses went up together, so the first streaking often shows on a whole cul-de-sac at once — even with no canopy yet, because the north wall still never sees sun.
The fix is the same as Tipp City: low-pressure chemistry, plants covered, granules left alone. If you also want the driveway, that is pressure / power washing — a different machine, a different page.

Low-pressure solution, dwell time, gentle rinse. Never a power washer on shingles.
Black Streaks
Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It has to be killed, not scrubbed.
Moss & Lichen
They root into the shingle. Force pulls granules off with them. We treat, then let weather finish the job.
Landscaping Protection
Beds get wet down and covered before anything goes on the roof, and rinsed after.
