Everybody in Troy Has the Same Week Circled
The Troy Strawberry Festival takes the first weekend of June, brings something like 150,000 people down to the levee and the square, and fills a lot of spare bedrooms in this town.
Which means the last two weeks of May are the busiest stretch of our calendar, and it is not close. People who have not thought about their windows since March suddenly have a sister-in-law arriving Thursday and a front room full of afternoon light showing every mark on the glass.
If you want a specific day, book in April or the first half of May. Leave it to the week before and we will fit you in where we can, but you are choosing from what is left. This is the one genuinely useful piece of scheduling advice we can give a Troy homeowner, so we lead with it.
Three Kinds of Troy Window
The glass in this town falls into three groups and they are not the same job. Anyone quoting you a flat per-window price without asking which you have is guessing.
True divided lights, downtown
Inside the old town boundary you get sashes with real muntin bars and a separate pane in every opening — six over six, nine over nine, sometimes more. There is no squeegee stroke that works on a four-inch pane, so these get cleaned by hand, one light at a time, with the glazing putty kept dry. A single window can hold eighteen panes. We price these on pane count, not window count, because pretending otherwise means either a bad quote or a rushed job.
Triple-track storms on the older stock
Aluminum storm windows turn up all over the established streets. The track at the bottom collects grit, paint flakes and dead insects, and it drains onto the glass every time it rains. Cleaning the pane and leaving the track is why a lot of people think their storms "just get dirty fast" — the dirt is sitting in the channel waiting for water. We pull them, clean both surfaces and clear the track before anything goes back.
Two-story colonials out east
The newer subdivisions on the east side are mostly two-story with vinyl double-hung sashes, and the upstairs windows are the ones nobody has cleaned since they bought the house. Most tilt in, which helps for the inside — but the outside still has to be reached, and a lot of homeowners quietly decide the upstairs is not worth the ladder. That half is included in our number.
The Water Here Is the Problem, Not the Glass
Miami County water comes up through limestone, which loads it with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Wash a window with it and the water evaporates but the minerals do not — they stay on the pane as the white haze people read as "still dirty".
It is why a careful DIY wash with a bucket and the garden hose can leave glass looking worse than before it was touched, and why the south-facing windows always come out worst: they dry fastest, so the minerals set before anyone can wipe them.
We rinse exterior glass with purified water that has had those minerals stripped out. It dries with nothing left behind, which is also why we do not towel the outside — there is nothing to towel off. The pane sheets clean.
